Worldbuilding: Neighborhood Map

I’ve got a lot on my plate this week, so today’s post is a quick one.

Namely, it’s a map of the neighborhoods of Maradaine where Thorn of Dentonhill takes place: Aventil, Dentonhill and the University of Maradaine.

This map also shows the territories of the seven street gangs that dominate the Aventil neighborhood.  I don’t do the same for Dentonhill because that neighborhood really doesn’t have the same divisions.  Mister Fenmere controls everything up to Waterpath.

But Aventil is a far more fractured neighborhood, as the map clearly shows.

All right, into the word mines I go.  Later.

  1. Hey, Marshall, I have a suggested reading for you. It’s an academic book so it’s ridiculously overpriced, so get it through interlibrary loan instead. My professional colleagues would stab me in a dark alley for that!

Anyway, it’s called The War of the Fists, and it’s about street gangs in Venice. They would have these battles at the boundaries of their territories, fought on one of the city’s innumerable bridges. Despite being an academic book, it’s highly readable and is a good source for some ideas.

When I saw your statement about the seven gangs, I immediately thought of the book.

  2. Skip- That does look interesting! But you weren’t kidding about ridiculously overpriced. (Amazon lists it at $70.00) Still, I’m all for doing good non-fictional research to give one’s writing additional verisimilitude. Thanks for the tip!

  3. There are several books on gangs in NYC, LA and other places. Late 1800s early 1900s gangs in NYC might be a good place to look. Depending on the (ideal) function of the Basement Bosses you might even wanna look into manorism and how some of the minor lords and units in that era were organized.
