{"id":720,"date":"2015-04-16T10:20:05","date_gmt":"2015-04-16T16:20:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mrmaresca.com\/wp\/?p=720"},"modified":"2015-04-16T10:20:05","modified_gmt":"2015-04-16T16:20:05","slug":"worldbuilding-environment-as-character","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mrmaresca.com\/wp\/worldbuilding-environment-as-character\/","title":{"rendered":"Worldbuilding: Environment as Character"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One of the things I love about\u00a0<em><strong>Game of Thrones\u00a0<\/strong><\/em>is how it uses a wide reach of locations&#8211; both in story and in the filming. \u00a0They shoot the show in Croatia, Ireland, Iceland, Morocco, and I don&#8217;t even know where else. \u00a0One of the great things Martin has done in the books&#8211; and it translates onto the show&#8211; is paint a large canvas of different places and different environments, and letting those environments define the character of that part of the story.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-721 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/mrmaresca.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Biome-Key-247x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"247\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mrmaresca.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Biome-Key-247x300.jpg 247w, https:\/\/mrmaresca.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Biome-Key.jpg 545w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 247px) 100vw, 247px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now, if you&#8217;re going to do this well, you need to do some research into biomes. \u00a0Now, there are several different definitions for the different types of biomes, different systems to define said biomes. \u00a0Most of these involve looking at the factors of temperature, moisture and elevation.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m partial to the definitions in my handy Biome Key, pictured here, and based off the World Wide Fund for Nature&#8217;s system. \u00a0Figuring out what biome your story is set in will define the character of your story. \u00a0Food, clothing and attitude of your people will all be drawn from the biome of their environment.<\/p>\n<p>Now, some of these distinctions may seem trivial&#8211; how different is a Xeric Shrubland from an Arid Desert or a Subtropical Dry Forest? \u00a0But having a strong understanding of exactly what the environment is like builds the verisimilitude of your worldbuilding.<\/p>\n<p>And with that, of course, is the flora and fauna. \u00a0Beyond the domesticated and edible ones, you have to think about how each of those exists in the environment. \u00a0If you&#8217;re building something fantastical or science-fictional, give some consideration to the whole ecology. \u00a0How do the different creatures survive their environment, especially if it&#8217;s harsh? \u00a0What do they eat? \u00a0What does what they eat eat? \u00a0How does what they eat avoid getting eaten long enough to maintain a balance. \u00a0You don&#8217;t want, say, an area filled with alpha predators and very little prey.<\/p>\n<p>What biomes are you writing in, and how are you distinguishing it as a unique place for your story?<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of the things I love about\u00a0Game of Thrones\u00a0is how it uses a wide reach of locations&#8211; both in story and in the filming. \u00a0They shoot the show in Croatia, [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-720","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/mrmaresca.com\/wp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/720"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/mrmaresca.com\/wp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/mrmaresca.com\/wp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mrmaresca.com\/wp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mrmaresca.com\/wp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=720"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/mrmaresca.com\/wp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/720\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":722,"href":"https:\/\/mrmaresca.com\/wp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/720\/revisions\/722"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/mrmaresca.com\/wp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=720"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mrmaresca.com\/wp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=720"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mrmaresca.com\/wp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=720"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
