{"id":596,"date":"2014-12-11T11:34:26","date_gmt":"2014-12-11T17:34:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mrmaresca.com\/wp\/?p=596"},"modified":"2014-12-11T12:01:26","modified_gmt":"2014-12-11T18:01:26","slug":"five-things-im-following","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mrmaresca.com\/wp\/five-things-im-following\/","title":{"rendered":"Five Things I&#8217;m Following"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I have to admit, I&#8217;m still figuring out social media, especially Twitter.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t think I&#8217;ll ever become a &#8220;Twitter personality&#8221;, in part because I focus a lot of what I &#8220;have to say&#8221; here on the blog, or don&#8217;t say publicly.\u00a0 Plus, when it comes to any issue I care about, by the time I reach Twitter, it&#8217;s been said better and smarter by someone else.<\/p>\n<p>I wouldn&#8217;t say I&#8217;m overly choosy about who I follow&#8211; on Twitter or elsewhere&#8211; but I don&#8217;t like a particularly crowded feed.\u00a0 So anyone I follow who is a high-volume poster, they better be posting things I want to read*, as well as things that I&#8217;m not likely to find elsewhere.\u00a0 Which is why I follow <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/saladinahmed\">@saladinahmed<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/LisaBolekaja\">@lisabolekaja<\/a>, who both post and re-tweet things that I, in my relatively sheltered life, might not otherwise be aware of.\u00a0 So I value getting their points of view.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m also a big fan of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NussbaumAbigail\">@NussbaumAbigail<\/a>, partly for her twitter feed, but mostly for her blog <a href=\"http:\/\/wrongquestions.blogspot.com\/\">Asking the Wrong Questions<\/a>.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t always agree with her points of view on things (though I think she&#8217;s spot-on when it comes to Battlestar Galactica), but I really enjoy reading her thoughts.<\/p>\n<p>Outside of the twitterverse, I&#8217;ve become mildly obsessed with John Green&#8217;s <em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCX6b17PVsYBQ0ip5gyeme-Q\">Crash Course<\/a><\/strong><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCX6b17PVsYBQ0ip5gyeme-Q\"> on YouTube<\/a>, especially the World History episodes.\u00a0 Honestly, if you&#8217;re a writer doing any sort of large-scale worldbuilding, it&#8217;s a great, well, crash course in the basics of the rise of civilization.\u00a0 I mean, most of it was stuff I essentially knew, but getting a refresher in a charismatically presented package helped re-frame my thoughts.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, for something different and fun, I&#8217;m also a big fan of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/channel\/UCORIeT1hk6tYBuntEXsguLg\"><em><strong>Scott Bradlee &amp; Postmodern Jukebox<\/strong><\/em><\/a>.\u00a0 Scott and his wide array of musician friends take modern pop songs and reframe them in old and different styles.\u00a0 It&#8217;s like peeking into an alternate timeline.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;-<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/mrmaresca.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/10406377_10105415672690390_8126622644644978457_n.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-599 \" src=\"http:\/\/mrmaresca.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/10406377_10105415672690390_8126622644644978457_n-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"10406377_10105415672690390_8126622644644978457_n\" width=\"201\" height=\"151\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mrmaresca.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/10406377_10105415672690390_8126622644644978457_n-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mrmaresca.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/10406377_10105415672690390_8126622644644978457_n.jpg 960w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 201px) 100vw, 201px\" \/><\/a>In other news: ARCs of <em><strong>Thorn of Dentonhill<\/strong><\/em> have arrived!\u00a0 I now have an actual, tangible THIS IS A REAL BOOK thing.\u00a0 I&#8217;m now almost completely sure that I&#8217;m not the victim of some super-elaborate prank.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;-<\/p>\n<p>*- I could tell you stories of the person I briefly followed who had set up a series of twenty-odd randomized autotweets plugging her books. Every day, three to five times a day, one of the same &#8220;BUY MY BOOK!&#8221; tweets.
