{"id":1345,"date":"2016-10-27T07:00:19","date_gmt":"2016-10-27T13:00:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/mrmaresca.com\/wp\/?p=1345"},"modified":"2016-10-26T23:37:34","modified_gmt":"2016-10-27T05:37:34","slug":"perils-of-the-writer-gearing-up-to-start-a-novel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mrmaresca.com\/wp\/perils-of-the-writer-gearing-up-to-start-a-novel\/","title":{"rendered":"Perils of the Writer: Gearing Up To Start A Novel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Some of you out there might be planning to participate in NaNoWriMo: National Novel Writing Month. \u00a0Good on you. \u00a0It isn&#8217;t something for me, in part because the pace demanded doesn&#8217;t match my ideal writing pace, and in part because, for me,\u00a0<strong><em>every month<\/em><\/strong> is Novel Writing Month. \u00a0My current schedule, my current system&#8230; it really doesn&#8217;t allow me much breathing room between projects.<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve compared writing a novel to running a marathon, but that&#8217;s not right. \u00a0It&#8217;s going on an expedition. \u00a0You&#8217;re going to trek out there and do some serious\u00a0<em>Lewis and Clark<\/em> level stuff to get from staring at a blank page to &#8220;Hey, I wrote a book!&#8221; \u00a0And if you were to cross to the Pacific or climb Everest or reach the south pole, you wouldn&#8217;t just strap your shoes on and start walking and find out what happens.<\/p>\n<p>No, you&#8217;re going to do some prep work. \u00a0You&#8217;re going to get yourself supplied. \u00a0What does that look like for this expedition?<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s my checklist:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"list-style-type: disc;\">\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/mrmaresca.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/MCI02-Map-for-Pub-Color.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-1251\" src=\"http:\/\/mrmaresca.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/MCI02-Map-for-Pub-Color-300x242.jpg\" alt=\"MCI02 Map for Pub Color\" width=\"300\" height=\"242\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mrmaresca.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/MCI02-Map-for-Pub-Color-300x242.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mrmaresca.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/MCI02-Map-for-Pub-Color-768x619.jpg 768w, https:\/\/mrmaresca.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/MCI02-Map-for-Pub-Color-1024x825.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/mrmaresca.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/MCI02-Map-for-Pub-Color.jpg 1210w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><strong>Worldbuilding:<\/strong> \u00a0At this point, for all the Maradaine books, this is more or less done, but each book will probably have some additional element to investigate or deepen. \u00a0In\u00a0<em><strong>An Import of Intrigue<\/strong><\/em>, that meant figuring out the street-level of The Little East in finer detail.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Outlines, Spreadsheets and Timetables:<\/strong> With three (or four) interconnected series in the same city, there&#8217;s a lot of moving parts, and a lot of keeping track of what happens when, and how that has repercussions elsewhere. \u00a0My outlines have a structure that have served me well, and in addition to writing on Scrivener, I&#8217;ve been playing with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.literatureandlatte.com\/scapple.php\">Scapple<\/a> (from the fine people who made Scrivener) and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aeontimeline.com\/\">Aeon Timeline<\/a>. \u00a0Both fine programs I recommend for free-form thinking and laying out timelines, respectively.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Character Work:\u00a0<\/strong>Every book, at the outset, has a Dramatis Personae, and this file gets updated over the course of the work, as new characters show up who weren&#8217;t intended in the original outline. \u00a0Sometimes minor, and those minor characters blow up as the series progress. \u00a0Also part of my process is getting myself a visual reference for the character in my head. \u00a0So I create a facepage of the main characters, digging through actor headshots (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.backstage.com\/talent\/grid\/?order_by=default\">here&#8217;s a good source<\/a>) to find people who look like the characters I imagine.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Playlist:\u00a0<\/strong>I don&#8217;t do too much of this, but I do try to find some music that fits the mood of the book I&#8217;m about to write.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>All this reminds me, I&#8217;ve got to get moving on finalizing the prep work for\u00a0<em><strong>A Parliament of Bodies<\/strong><\/em> in the near future. \u00a0And you&#8217;ve probably got some work to do, also. \u00a0Get on that.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Some of you out there might be planning to participate in NaNoWriMo: National Novel Writing Month. \u00a0Good on you. \u00a0It isn&#8217;t something for me, in part because the pace demanded [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-1345","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/mrmaresca.com\/wp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1345"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/mrmaresca.com\/wp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/mrmaresca.com\/wp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mrmaresca.com\/wp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mrmaresca.com\/wp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=1345"}],"version-history":[{"count":1,"href":"https:\/\/mrmaresca.com\/wp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1345\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":1346,"href":"https:\/\/mrmaresca.com\/wp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/1345\/revisions\/1346"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/mrmaresca.com\/wp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=1345"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mrmaresca.com\/wp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=1345"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/mrmaresca.com\/wp\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=1345"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
